OPERATION CRAYOLA CRACKDOWN :)

Kids Speaking Up For Safety In Their Communities

Operation Crayola Crackdown!  Kids lending their voice in support of safety in their communities!

The festive season is here and many people will begin their holiday celebrations with social events that include alcohol.  Each year, police have a safety campaign called the RIDE program (Reducing Impaired Driving Everywhere).  In addition to enforcement, police officers work to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking alcohol and driving vehicles.  This year, the OPP, the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) and the Northwestern Health Unit will team together and here is how youth can help!

OPP will be dropping off LCBO bags to all elementary schools within the Rainy River District.  Teachers will receive all the downloadable files below.  Students are asked to create special drawings with messages that they can attach to the LCBO bags.  Stuff the bag with a "Low Risk Drinking Guidelines" pamphlet and officers will pick up the finished bags and deliver them to the LCBO so they can be handed out at the point of sale during the festive season. The messages can be words or pictures letting the adults know that the kids care about them and the safety of their community!

AND...there will be a "best message" contest!  Enter as many bags as you like!  The winner with the "best message" will be selected from each school and awarded with an ITunes Gift Card thanks to the Northwestern Health Unit.

We like to share our materials.  If you are interested in using our materials as a guide to implement  your own program, feel free to download the following files.

Summer 2014 - Cops & Kids!

1st Annual "Spoke In Mirrors" Family Bike Ride
OPP, CN Rail Police, Northwestern Health Unit
sponsored by Tess's Kitchen and Community Policing Committee

We Encourage Helmet Use!!

Helmet use is so important to prevent head injuries.   We encourage parents to model the behaviour and wear a helmet!!  CPC thanks the Kiwanis for their support with the first annual Fort Frances Skateboard Park BBQ!  Kids were encouraged to come to the BBQ with their bikes and WEAR THEIR BIKE HELMETS!  In 2014, we had 20 kids show up with their helmets hungry for burgers.  John Beaton, a paramedic and CPC Chairperson gave a great presentation how a helmet protects your head and the importance of wearing it!

Interesting Facts....
Are you a Canadian living on the US Border?...planning to buy a child car seat?  Every parents should know.....Cross border shopping may be tempting, but when it comes to buying a child’s car seat or booster seat for use in Canada, Transport Canada and Health Canada warn consumers against it.  Did you know that it is illegal to import and use a child car seat that does not comply with Canadian standards? Many consumers are looking south of the border and in other countries for the best buy without knowing all of the facts. Some are either bringing the seats with them across the border or are buying them by mail order and having them shipped home.  Get the facts!  Canadians, buy your child car seat in Canada!

Hang on!  Before you plan your yard sale....did you know?  Everyone holding a garage sale is legally responsible for ensuring that products being sold, whether new or used, are safe and meet current regulatory requirements...that applies to Child Car Seats!!!

Positive Tickets Program

Picture
The OPP Summer Students are out on patrol, observing for youth who are doing a great job obeying the rules of the road and sporting helmets!  When youth are "caught" wearing their helmets or setting a positive example for other cyclists, they are awarded with a Positive Ticket - a coupon for a free ice cream cone.  Way to go!!!!

We would like to thank the Town of Fort Frances and Dairy Queen for supporting the OPP Positive Tickets Program and youth in our communities!

On November 4th, the Township of Emo in conjunction with the North Western Health Unit is hosting a Family Safety Night.  This is an event that hopes to increase awareness of the various health, safety and community services available in Emo and the Rainy River District.
As a service industry, I would like to extend an invitation to you to participate in the Emo Family Safety Night.  It will take place upstairs at the Emo Arena and run from 3:30-6:00 p.m.  Those who participate will have the opportunity to set up a booth where they can give community members information about the services they offer.
Our hope is that this will be a fun and interactive family event, so the more creative you are with your booth, the better!
If you would like to participate, or would like more information please feel free to email or call me at the below phone number.
