PROJECT SAFE HALLOWEEN MARKS 12TH ANNIVERSARY (RAINY RIVER DISTRICT) (FORT FRANCES, ON) The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) proudly partners with members of the Rainy River District Community Policing Committee (RRDCPC) as we mark the 12th anniversary of Project Safe Halloween from October 27 – 31, 2014 across the Rainy River District. This year, RRDCPC will focus on “Doing the BRIGHT Thing!”. Together, we work to engage youth, families and community with a variety of activities designed to intentionally build assets in youth. Project Safe Halloween has mobilized and engaged even more community partners to deliver three components of the Project including: - October 27 – 30, 2014 - “Doing the BRIGHT Thing!” school presentations in every Rainy River District elementary school. This year, the Halloween Safety message will remind students about the importance of staying visible and staying safe. Each presentation is delivered by a member of local law enforcement and a member of RRDCPC. With help from local sponsors and the Moffatt Family Fund, we have designed an attractive brochure full of safety tips. We will showcase a YouTube video by 3M called “No White at Night” and distribute close to 3000 reflective/reusable armbands to all students between early learning and Grade 8! - October 31 from 4pm – 6pm – “Trunk or Treat” is a brand new Halloween afternoon celebration hosted by the Fort Frances Public Library, but only until 6pm! A quick and fun event for all, everyone is encouraged to register their vehicle and decorate their trunks in colourful Halloween themes. The event is designed to celebrate community togetherness and safety in support of children. There will also be a pumpkin carving contest and a Zombie Cat Walk Fashion Show at the Library during the same time frame. OPP officers will have their Mobile Command Unit in full haunted house decor! - October 31, from 4pm – 7pm - Community Spaghetti “Take Out” Dinner – What busy parent wouldn’t love a quick, affordable and nutritious meal for their families on Halloween night? DRIVERS FAILING TO STOP FOR SCHOOL BUSES CAUSE CONCERN FOR OPP (NORTH WEST REGION, ON) – North West Region Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is gearing up for this year’s back-to-school season by encouraging everyone to be vigilant and patient when you encounter school buses. The Independent School Bus Operators Association (ISBOA) conducted a province-wide study with their school bus companies between May 5, 2014 and May 9, 2014. During this period, bus drivers reported incidents where vehicles failed to stop for the school bus when lights were flashing. Results show that approximately 151 such incidents occurred each day during the 5-day study. The majority of these incidents (75%) happened while the vehicle was approaching the bus from the front. These numbers concern the OPP because bus drivers are not the only people who are responsible for the lives of our children. “School buses carry the most valuable cargo on our highways, our children. The vehicles are bright yellow with large flashing red lights making them highly visible. There is no excuse for failing to stop for a school bus.”, says North West Region OPP Traffic Staff Sergeant Ken Mantey. “Monitoring speeds and avoiding distractions are two ways drivers can ensure kids have a safe route to school.” The Highway Traffic Act of Ontario indicates that when a school bus is stopped on the roadway with its red lights activated and “Stop” sign out, drivers must come to a complete stop in-front of and behind the bus. Motorists must not pass the stopped bus until the stop arm is retracted and the red lights are turned off. The owner of a vehicle can be charged if their vehicle fails to stop for a school bus even if they were not the driver. Back-to-school is always a busy time for everyone. The OPP and ISBOA are working together to educate the public and to raise awareness about the possible serious consequences of ignoring school bus flashing lights. “Family-owned school bus companies across the province are pleased to be working with their local law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus,” says Steve Hull, President of ISBOA. “Our common goal is to make back-to-school – and the rest of the school year- safe for all children who ride the bus.” For more information on the study please visit the ISBOA website at: I Stop You Stop Campaign For more safety tips and information please visit http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/ and www.opp.ca. - 30 – Contact: Traffic Staff Sergeant Ken Mantey North West Region Headquarters Phone: 807-473-2723 July 31, 2014 - OPP RELEASES NEW PSAs ABOUT IMPORTANCE OF WEARING LIFEJACKETS
