Ontario Provincial Police News Portal [RAINY RIVER DISTRICT] RAINY RIVER DISTRICT DETACHMENT DEALING WITH CURRENT TREND CALLED 'NEKNOMINATION' 2014-02-13

FROM/DE:  Rainy River District OPP                    Date:  February 14, 2014

RAINY RIVER DISTRICT DETACHMENT DEALING WITH CURRENT TREND CALLED ‘NEKNOMINATION’

(FORT FRANCES, ON) – The Rainy River District Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is cautioning the public to be aware of a new online trend called Neknomination.  The concept involves a drinking game where a person will quickly consume a large quantity of alcohol by “necking” the bottle while participating in some type of extremely risky activity.  The event is videotaped and then uploaded to a social media site while challenging at least two friends to respond with an increasingly risky activity.

The concept has recently garnered international media attention because some of the activities have led to serious bodily injury and death.

Officers are aware of a recently posted Neknomination video involving youth from the Atikokan area.  This is a community safety issue and the OPP are currently investigating the incident. Where appropriate, charges will be laid. Parents are requested to talk to their children about their alcohol use and online risky behavior.

“Videos such as this negatively impact our youth because they promote dangerous behaviour and glorify heavy alcohol consumption, says Constable Anne McCoy.  Alcohol related tragedies are the number one cause of injury and death in youth and most are preventable.  With this particular fad, youth are not only under the influence of alcohol but are also impacted by peer pressure to take part in increasingly dangerous activities, which could result in deadly consequences”.

On November 4th, the Township of Emo in conjunction with the North Western Health Unit is hosting a Family Safety Night.  This is an event that hopes to increase awareness of the various health, safety and community services available in Emo and the Rainy River District.
As a service industry, I would like to extend an invitation to you to participate in the Emo Family Safety Night.  It will take place upstairs at the Emo Arena and run from 3:30-6:00 p.m.  Those who participate will have the opportunity to set up a booth where they can give community members information about the services they offer.
Our hope is that this will be a fun and interactive family event, so the more creative you are with your booth, the better!
If you would like to participate, or would like more information please feel free to email or call me at the below phone number.
